2013:  A GREYT Year of Change for our Greys

Greetings Greyhound Friends!  As I sit to write this year-end letter, I can hardly believe how fast the year has passed!  Can it really be December?  Yes, it is, and we’re within the last month of our 20th year placing Greyhounds in forever homes.  I’m proud to report GFNC added over 100 Greys to our ‘adopted hounds’ list in 2013, and we continue to support Greyhound education and adoption across the state and across the country.  There are currently 21 Greyhound tracks operating in 7 states, and our work continues to be vital to the Greys who retire from these tracks each year.  Florida continues to operate the most tracks, and many of our Greys come from this state and West Virginia.

This year, Wayne Lambert and Blanche Fedor, our long-term kennel staff members, were joined by Larry Neal, and the team continues to work with countless volunteers every day.  We could not do this work without them and we thank them for all the hours they dedicated to our kennel this year.

As 2013 draws to a close, we can proudly look back on the renovation of our kennel space.  First, teams worked to remove the previous kennels, clean, refinish, repaint and reinforce the kennel walls, and sand and seal the floors.  What’s more, the prep work labor, equipment and materials were donated.  Then in April, Mason Company installed 22 shiny new kennels.  A new back door and siding were installed - materials and labor were donated once again by generous volunteers.  Through the generosity of many, many Greyhound friends the renovation project was completed on time and within budget.  The ribbon cutting event at our 20th Anniversary Open House in May was a joyous celebration.  We are very proud of our new space and grateful to those who helped us build it.  To remember those who helped us in previous years, we built a special commemorative wall dedicated to those who donated to the first kennel renovation project 15 years ago.  The kennels removed were donated to other non-profit animal rescue groups in the Greensboro area.  The generosity of our team goes on and on.  We are truly thankful for all the blessings we’ve received this year.

GFNC had many successful events this year, including our 20th Anniversary Open House, our 9th Annual Mountain Hounds event, Spa Days, countless Meet and Greets, television coverage, parades, and Santa Photos across the state, just to name a few.  Our Hound Boutique has moved further into the world of e-advertising, and we are seeing a great response to advertising via Facebook, email, and other social media outlets.  All this, again, thanks to the work of countless volunteers.

2014 will bring new challenges, and our efforts will focus on continuing to keep GFNC in the position to make dreams of a forever home come true for the hounds and the people they love.

Fundraising continues to be a challenge in changing economic times, and we continue to explore grants to help us defer the cost of operations.  Your generosity is vital to our success.  We appreciate the trust you place in us when you donate to GFNC – your donation helps support the daily operations of our kennel including rent, utilities, vet expenses, and other operating expenses.  Without you, we simply would no longer be able to do the work we do every day placing hundreds of Greyhounds in forever homes.  For that, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Happy Holidays and a joyous New Year from Greyhound Friends of North Carolina!  We look forward to more GREYT years ahead!
